Utilizing reverse osmosis, these systems can remove vast amounts of salt and other contaminants from water. Reverse osmosis involves initially applying high pressure to the highly concentrated saline solution side of a semi-permeable membrane using a high-pressure pump. This high pressure forces the concentrated saltwater through the semi-permeable membrane, allowing only water molecules to pass through its small pores while rejecting and draining salt and other contaminants from the concentrate side. This results in clean drinking water emerging from the permeate side, ready for daily use.
